Cranking up the generator on BLM land somewhere in California – winter 2002.

All summer we talked about this day – park for free on BLM land, public land regulated by the Bureau of Land Management. Finally our dream came true. The experience became an adventure in learning.

Weasel, my husband, had envisioned being totally alone in the desert, setting up perimeter wires and being on the lookout for banditos and coyotes. Much to our surprise, there were dozens of other RVers taking advantage of our public lands. Their presence wiped away all of our fears and apprehensions.

Weasel cranked up the generator as I cooked dinner. The sense of freedom was overwhelming. We quietly watched the sun set over endless miles of desert as we imagined what it must have been like for the wagon trains that crossed here over 100 years ago.
